Verbrugge UK Ltd Contract
In 1987 Verbrugge Internationale Wegtransporten of the Netherlands wanted to gain a foothold in the UK market.
To enable the company to do so they initially acquired Incobulk later changing the name to Verbrugge UK Ltd and relocating from Eastleigh in Hampshire to Felixstowe in Suffolk.

The first day of the contract in 1988 see’s Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F630 SFV Fleet No 51 ‘Great Gable’, with driver the late David Ireland and Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F780 SFR Fleet No 76 ‘Helvellyn’ driven by the late Vic Mason.
The late Tom Riding took this picture of the brand new vehicles in August 1988 when the contract first began and always called this photograph ‘The Likely Lads’.
Both tractor unit’s were purchased new from Seddon Atkinson Vehicles Ltd on the 20th of May 1988, each one costing £28,878 plus vat, but were not registered until two months later on the 1st of August shortly before the start of the contract.
Another shot taken on the first day of the contract in August 1988 shows Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F630 SFV Fleet No 51 ‘Great Gable’ and Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F780 SFR Fleet No 76 ‘Helvellyn’.
Both tractor unit’s were purchased new from Seddon Atkinson Vehicles Ltd on the 20th of May 1988.
Each one cost £28,878 plus vat but were not registered until two months later on the 1st of August in preparation for the contact which began later that same month.
Seddon Atkinson 4-11 tractor unit Reg No E40 GFR Fleet No 55 Rising Star, powered by a 290 LXDT Gardner engine had originally been purchased brand new for the Incobulk contract on the 31st of July 1987 at a cost of £28,716 plus vat but was not registered until the 1st of September 1987.

A couple of years later it was brought into the workshops, repainted and allocated to the Verbrugge contract in October 1989.

Seen here on the 26th of March 1995, when eight years old, it is now looking rather the worse for wear as rust begins to eat into the cab.
Just three months later, after this picture was taken, E40 GFR was withdrawn from the fleet and sold on the 6th of June 1995 to J.C. Commercials of Bootle for £2.600 plus vat.
It was later bought by France and Wood of Marsden near Huddersfield who ran it on general haulage until it was finally scrapped in 1999, see Life after Riding’s.

After eight years service F630 SFV was sold on to local dealer Sid Hartley of Whittingham near Preston on the 30th of March 1996 for the sum of £2,300 plus vat who in turn sold it on to a local fairground operator.

Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F630 SFV Fleet No 51 ‘Great Gable’ is seen here some years later still working on the Verbrugge contract.
It is coupled up to a 33 foot skelly tipping trailer with a 30 foot Verbrugge container on board.
Note the Seddon Atkinson grill logo has now virtually disappeared with constant washing of the vehicle over the years.
W & J Riding’s Seddon Atkinson 401 4X2 tractor unit Reg No DCW 930Y Fleet No 71 ‘Vanguard’ is pictured here after coming to the rescue of Verbrugge livered Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4X2 tractor unit Reg No F630 SFV ‘Great Gable’.
It was destined for Riding’s workshop’s within Longridge depot were it would be going for repair.
A final shot of Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F630 SFV Fleet No 51 ‘Great Gable’ seen here in it’s final days at Riding’s being used as a yard shunter in February 1996.

A nice on the road shot of Seddon Atkinson 4-11 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F780 SFR Fleet No 76 ‘Helvellyn’ as it heads West along the A1033 Hedon Road Kingston upon Hull in August 1994.
Driven from new by the late Vic Mason Reg No F780 SFR was six years old at the time having been registered new some six years earlier on the 1st of August 1988.
Seen here sporting a new front bumper and a recycled front grill, different to the ones it has in the previous pictures, these had been fitted due to it suffering some accident damage in 1993.

ERF E10 4×2 tractor unit Reg No F560 ACK Fleet No 106 ‘Scafell Pike’ was powered by a Cummins L10 325 engine.
Purchased new from ERF on the 12th of January 1989 at a cost of £30,056 plus vat it was first registered for road use on the 10th of February and is seen just after entering service.
This was one of only a handful of ERF 4×2 tractor units that were assigned to the Verbrugge contract.
After nine years service with Riding’s F560 ACK was sold on the 20th of March 1998 to D.G. Taylor of Driffield in East Yorkshire for an undisclosed sum.
