Thank You!

A special thank you to the late Thomas William Riding, former managing director and chief executive of W & J Riding for 25 years, to whom this website is dedicated.

Over the years Tom was kind enough to supply a vast amount of detailed historical information along with many of the superb rare photographs featured and without his invaluable help and dedication this website would not have been possible.

The site now contains over 2500 images, complete with in depth details, all of which are accessible via the main menu & side menu (marked with the mobile menu icon of 3 lines on a mobile & tablet).

ICI Tarpaulins

In 1967 ICI asked W & J Riding if they would take part in a series of publicity photographs for what was at the time their new ICI terylene tarpaulins which were designed to be light and durable.

Atkinson Mk I Silver Knight 4×2 tractor unit Reg No CTB 260E Fleet No 52 and Ergomatic cabbed Leyland Beaver tractor unit Reg No TTC 900D Fleet No 48 were given the honor to feature in the series of pictures along with long serving Riding drivers, the late Bill Coolican and the late Louis Gornall, which were all taken in the grounds of  ICI Fibres head office in Harrogate North Yorkshire.

In this particular photograph Ergomatic cabbed Leyland Beaver tractor unit Reg No TTC 900D Fleet No 48 was given the honor to feature in the picture with Bill Coolican, the regular driver of TTC 990D, stood on top of the load while Louis Gornall is on the ground.

Driver Bill Coolican stood on top of the load while carrying one of the new ICI sheets.

Another photograph showing the late Bill Coolican roping up at the head office of ICI in Harrogate in 1967.

Atkinson Mk I Silver Knight 4×2 tractor unit Reg No CTB 260E Fleet No 52 with driver the late Louis Gornall standing on the rear of the 33 foot Crane Fruehauf trailer.

In the last of the series of photographs we see Atkinson Mk I Silver Knight 4×2 tractor unit Reg No CTB 260E Fleet No 52 which was the second Gardner 6LXB 180 powered Atkinson to enter service with the fleet.

Driven from new by Louis Gornall it is seen here outside ICI Fibres head office at Harrogate in 1967 and shows clearly one of Riding’s Crane Fruehauf built 33 foot trailers of which Riding’s had dozens.
